  28. I noticed yesterday that a fellow got a warning message when starting
  29. p-mode megaem. I think my card is like 2.7 or 2.8, but I don't see no
  30. message. Does that mean my card works better ? I thought only the MAX
  31. and ACE had codec-chip which made emulation easier.... shrug.

  75. Now, don't be too hard on Windows.  The Atari 2600 doesn't use a standard 
  76. 6502, and does use additional chips that were hard to program initially, 
  77. much less in an emulator.  Check out the emulation discussions on the 
  78. topic in alt.atari.2600 (I think is the name of the group...I am an 
  79. infrequent reader).  I learned 6502, 6800, and even 8088 assembly pretty 
  80. easily, and the code for the auxiliary graphics chip in the 2600 confuses 
  81. the hell out of me.

  83. Still, the overhead required by ACTION PACK _does_ seem rather large.

  102.         Since there has been a question about upgrading the RAM on the GUS,
  103. then I thought I would ask something similar. I too only have 256k and would
  104. like to upgrade to 1mb. Does anyone know the cheapest place I can get them
  105. from(UK)? The cheapest upgrade I've seen is =A340, but I'm sure there is
  106. somewhere cheaper.

  141. I just got a GUSMax (512K) and it seems like a lot of the MIDI files I
  142. play give me a "This file may not play correctly with the default MIDI
  143. setup" warning in Windows. I e-mailed Gravis and they told me "Everyone
  144. gets this error. Just disable it." Gee.. What a great way to solve the 
  145. problem - ignore it! And if eveyone gets this error, then why don't they 
  146. increase the amount of RAM the card ships with??

  160. I've just been reading some old digest, and I noticed something
  161. interesting...
  162.  
  163. A number of people are writing and saying new SBOS & mega-em
  164. do not work on their pre-2.7 rev GUS boards.  Funny thing
  165. is I recognize a lot of the names of those people.  Many
  166. of these people are the ones who have made regular contributions
  167. to this mailing list and ftp site.  I see a lot of names
  168. of people who persistently write messages here, helping new
  169. users of GUS boards, answering questions, promoting the
  170. card.  And these are people that have been doing so for the
  171. last two years.

  173. It's been said that GUS board users are fanatical and 'cult-like'
  174. in their promotion and support of the card.  I prefer Matt
  175. Arbeid's (previous Grav employee, now with ATI) description:
  176. technical evangelists.
  177.  
  178. These technical evangelists are the ones that have unified
  179. and strengthened the GUS user community.  These are the people
  180. that have been indirectly supporting the GUS board and Gravis
  181. over the long haul.  Seems a shame they are the ones being
  182. let down now...

  197. I have d'loaded three or four programs for my D10 keyboard.  They are 
  198. supposed to be file/patch managers but I haven't had luck with ANY of 
  199. them.

  201. With Livewire audio's d10 "tones" sampler, they give you two programs to 
  202. send patches to the d10 with -- MIDIEX and QS.  Both need an MPU401 
  203. interface but even with the Beta Megaem, I can't get the patches to 
  204. transfer.

  206. With the Windows Midi Watcher, I am totally confused on how it works 
  207. (just in case someone mentiones the program.  I will try to contact the 
  208. programmer).
  209.  
  210. With Midimenu for DOS, I can use megaem and get the program to recognize 
  211. the MPU interface (I think), but it won't access my keyboard's patch 
  212. dump).
  213.  
  214. So, are there other programs?  Are there limitations to the Megaem 
  215. MPU-401 interface emulation?  Am I lost?

  238. Nope. Where did you get that idea? If you were thinking of this because 
  239. the latest SBOS requires a GUS MAX, this is because this version of SBOS 
  240. is only a testing version of their next generation of software (like SBOS,
  241. setup....etc). When the release version comes out, it will support all
  242. boards. Or so I've read.

  247. Well, if you can't wait, you should do what I and a lot of others are
  248. doing. Use the Manley GUS OS/2 driver. Register for a mere $25 and
  249. you'll be able to use your GUS in OS/2, DOS and Windows. Robert has done
  250. a neat thing in putting together a driver so that you can set your DOS
  251. and Windows up for a Roland card, then the driver will do the conversion
  252. to the GUS in the background and away you go. Sound in OS/2, DOS and
  253. Windows while under OS/2.

  258. Keep it. If OS/2 is you only hangup then get the Manley driver and away
  259. you go. You'd especially want to keep it if AMD does come through with
  260. the GUS chip hence GUS should then become an industry standard hence you
  261. may want to switch back later on if you get out now.

  272. Using GUS MAX with install version 3.58 on disks, my initial installation
  273. went ok.  Now, much later, when I reinstall, all goes well until I get to
  274. the question about installing for Windows -- after that things crash, and
  275. I discover that disk #1 has been completely ERASED.  Luckily, I have
  276. backups, so I can do it over and over again, like an idiot.  Any
  277. suggestions?  At last resort I will have to reinstall Windows, I guess.

  280. get any sound effects from Doom or Wolfenstein (e.g., gunshots)?  I've 
  281. been through all the settings.

  299. Ok, I finally found Gravis cards around here. But the Max costs 2x the
  300. normal UltraSound price.
  301. I'd like to know if there are any differences that justify that, besides
  302. the 44/16 recording/multicd. Are there any differences in playback
  303. quality? Just because one of my friend saw some games with GUS and GUS
  304. MAX options.
  305. Also, the same question about the new ACE, any difs in playback quality?

  317. While I don't know where VFW11D.ZIP or .EXE exists (not on microsoft.com
  318. as that name anyways) you can get vfw1.1d and new versions of the Indeo
  319. software which further improves the video playback (better buffering,
  320. lower memory requirements, etc. according to the Intel docs) in the file
  321. iv32rt.exe on ftp.intel.com in /pub/IAL/multimedia.

  323. vfw1.1a even improved things greatly for me.  With both 1.1a and 1.1d I
  324. can now playback even with GUS buffers of 8192 and the sound and video is
  325. fine.
